Dandy in focus on candid camera

CLOSED circuit television (CCTV) will be introduced to Menzies Avenue, Dandenong, as part of a council pilot program.
City of Greater Dandenong councillors voted that the program be implemented and a report be submitted on its success within six months.
Councillor Youhorn Chea said while he supported the pilot program he could not understand why Menzies Avenue was chosen over more problematic areas such as Springvale or Noble Park.
“I do not understand why we don’t go to places that have a lot of problems,” Cr Chea said.
Cr Roz Blades said she shared those concerns with Cr Chea.
“I fully endorse Menzies Avenue,” Cr Blades said.
“But for the pilot to last for two years, some other problem areas can’t wait that long.”
Community services director Mark Doubleday said that several things were taken into account when choosing the area for the program.
“We needed an environment where everything could be tested in an area we know we can get the best result,” Mr Doubleday said.
“We have not ruled out other areas, it was a very difficult choice.”
Mr Doubleday said that a report would be presented to the council at the earliest time possible, not necessarily after the two years.
Cr Angela Long praised the program and said Menzies Avenue was chosen because it was a smaller area that would need fewer cameras than other proposed areas.
“The differences in cost were dramatic,” Cr Long said.
“But I have spoken with Menzies Avenue residents and they are very happy.”
