AFTER 12 years as a Springvale Benevolence Society member, Yvonne Herring has been elected secretary and said she had very big shoes to fill.
The Lightwood Ward councillor has followed the footsteps of Wes Eggleston, who died in February after being the society’s secretary for 45 years.
The Springvale Benevolence Society has been operating for 47 years and has provided assistance to families in crisis in the Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough areas.
Cr Herring said its longevity was a testament to its importance in the region.
“It’s a great society, run entirely by volunteers,” she said.
“We don’t claim anything back from it.”
Cr Herring said there would be many challenges in her new role, especially in the months close to Christmas.
“There are so many needy people in the Springvale and Noble Park area that need our help,” she said.
“We need to make sure we can get funding for these people. We get council and government grants and all the money goes towards food vouchers.”
Cr Herring said the society has organised a food drive where members would make Christmas hampers. Residents have been urged to donate non-perishable food items for the hampers.
However, other items such as money, toys or furniture can be donated.
“Our help continues all year round, but Christmas is especially important,” Cr Herring said.
“A lot of people are doing it rough and can’t afford to buy a turkey or ham to celebrate, or toys for their children. We want to give them that little boost so they too can enjoy Christmas.”
Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact Cr Herring on 0434 560 241 or call the Springvale Benevolence Society on 9546 5558.
