Hoons to hit the spotlight

ANTI hoon-crusader James Kerr has won over Greater Dandenong Council in his campaign for better street lighting in Five Ways industrial estate, Keysborough.
Mr Kerr, who had long campaigned for a CCTV network and lights to deter hoon drivers that have plagued the estate, was one of just two public submitters to the council’s 2014-2015 draft budget.
At last Monday’s council meeting, corporate services director Mick Jaensch said the council would “look to source funding” for improved lighting in the estate.
He said the funds would be found from either the 2013-2014 budget or the upcoming financial year budget.
Mr Kerr had requested funds for brighter lights on the roundabout at Keysborough and Carson avenues opposite his Red Roo Commerical Environmental Equipment business.
The extra lighting would help produce sharp CCTV footage of night-time hooning to be forwarded to police.
“There’s one thing hoons don’t like and that is to be filmed on CCTV.”
Mr Kerr has shot footage of several hoon drivers using some of his suite of 24/7 high-definition CCTV cameras pointed at the roundabout.
He has also enlisted neighbouring businesses to install on-site CCTV cameras as a further deterrent.
