IRENE Herceg hopes to shock a few people into supporting a worthy cause.
The 70 year old will take part in the five-kilometre leg of The Age Run Melbourne fund-raiser next Sunday to raise awareness and money for charity organisation ME/CFS Australia.
Mrs Herceg said she would dye her hair “a delightful blue”, the colour of the organisation, if she raised at least $5000.
“I’d very much like to have someone do my hair in a puzzle [the organisation’s logo] but I don’t think they can do that,” she said.
ME/CFS Australia, based in Dandenong, provides services and support for people living with myalgic encephalomyelitis, better known as chronic fatigue syndrome. The condition has many symptoms, including severe fatigue, and can affect people all ages.
“People say it’s like having the flu and being run over by a truck,” Mrs Herceg said. “Most of these people never get back to a normal, pre-illness level of health.”
She said she had volunteered with ME/CFS Australia for about eight years because a member of her family had the illness.
Mrs Herceg, who works as a nurse, said she volunteered with the organisation whenever she was available. “I do anything that I have the skills to do and that needs to be done.”
