Food poisoning source identified

A PORK roll and two pork meatballs were confirmed as containing the salmonella bacteria at a Springvale bakery closed down by authorities two weeks ago.
Department of Human Services (DHS) and City of Greater Dandenong council officers closed down the Springvale Cake and Bakery in Springvale Road, Springvale, under the Health Act, after 11 people who tested positive to salmonella food poisoning were linked to the bakery’s products.
The DHS seized all of the food and analysed it and has returned positive results in one pork roll and two pork meatballs of the salmonella bacteria.
Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said the council had been working hard to ensure all food premises within the city abided by strict food practices.
He said the council and DHS had acted swiftly when the Salmonella poisoning was first discovered.
Springvale Cake and Bakery remains closed. It is being renovated.
It must pass a food safety inspection by health authorities before it is allowed to reopen.
Authorities have again reinforced the importance of safe food handling.
Salmonella is a harmful bacteria resulting in painful symptoms, including headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.
