Recruits won’t feel the heat

RESIDENTS who fall victim to the winds of heroism will be unable to assist CFA crews this summer.
Dandenong CFA officer Trevor Owen said intense fire seasons and related press coverage often encouraged new members.
However, he warned they would not be fighting bushfires without at least six months training – and the necessary experience.
“We really are reliant on our own people now,” Mr Owen said.
“Obviously, firefighting is extremely dangerous, and it is something that comes not only through teaching and training, but also experience.
“Because of the legal issues today and the intense challenges before us, we can’t afford to allow people to just jump on the back of a truck.”
