YOUNG refugees will be at less risk of social isolation thanks to a new motor mechanics’ program in Greater Dandenong.
Kar Kulture is a project run by the South Eastern Region Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) in partnership with Victoria Police and Mission Australia.
It was launched last month at the graduation of a similar program for at-risk youth, Handbrake Turn.
The project will bring together refugee and Australian-born young people to work together on restoring a second-hand car.
MRC chief executive Jenny Semple said the partnership between Australian-born and refugee young people would be of benefit to both parties.
“After young people arrive in Australia, they often feel very isolated and it’s difficult for them to make friends in the wider community – especially if they look or sound very different to us,” she said.
“On the other hand, Australian young people may not fully understand young people from refugee backgrounds, or the reasons why they were forced to flee their home and come here”.
The project also targets participants’ understanding of Victorian road rules.
Once the car is completely restored, it will be used to provide valuable driving practice to participants who are on their L-plates.
For those participants who do not yet have their L-plates, workshops will be conducted to help them pass the exam before the car is completed.
MRC refugee youth worker Lorien Vecellio said the project prompted young people to show initiative and to network with the wider community to complete the task of restoring a car.
“The Kar Kulture team will decide how they want to improve the car, and then raise funds and seek sponsorship to get the required materials,” he said.
Participants have been interviewed and selected to form the group and will work on the car until August.
During this time, they will also participate in road safety workshops and experience working with Victoria Police members.
Local organisations supporting the project include Mission Australia’s Handbrake Turn Dandenong, Chisholm Institute of TAFE and the RACV.
