CITY of Greater Dandenong mayor Maria Sampey has accused Dandenong Plaza management of upping rent prices beyond the reach of some if its retailers.
She said she was told that rates have risen in one case from $3000 a month to $10,000 a month for a permanent position.
Cr Sampey said those who had refused to sign the new agreements had been offered smaller, less prominent shops under casual agreements.
“They’ve put them on casual because they won’t sign the lease for $10,000 a month,” Cr Sampey said.
“That sort of increase is ridiculous.
“Small businesses need help to survive, not this type of treatment.
“A rent hike from $3000 to $10,000 is outrageous.”
Dandenong Plaza centre manager Lisa Fleming said in a statement that she could not comment on the details of rent agreements, but said the rates were in line with market conditions.
“The disclosure of rents is obviously information of a commercially sensitive nature and it is inappropriate for us to comment in detail,” she said.
“However, we can confirm that rents within Dandenong Plaza are a reflection of market conditions.
“Any decision regarding leases in our centre is carefully considered and we aim to balance the needs of lessees with those of our customers, retailers and investors.
“The management of Dandenong Plaza maintains an opendoor policy and we welcome the opportunity to discuss individual arrangements with retailers in our Centre,” Ms Fleming said.
