GREATER Dandenong walls are coming under scrutiny, and the community’s encouraged to express any concerns.
City of Greater Dandenong will carry out inspections on freestanding walls and other structures, such as fences, on council and private land.
The move follows a request from the Building Commission in the wake of the recent wall collapse tragedy in Melbourne, which claimed three lives.
Greater Dandenong Mayor Angela Long said it was an important exercise to restore public confidence in areas with walls and other freestanding structures, but she did not believe there was any cause for alarm.
“We have a strong system of inspection and maintenance which has been in place for many years,” she said.
“Council will check structures on its land and, when made aware of concerns, arrange for inspection of walls on private land.”
Residents concerned about any walls or other freestanding structures in Greater Dandenong can contact the council with details.
Council engineering services director Bruce Rendall said the inspections might sometimes have an impact on pedestrians, as some inspections would require the temporary closure of footpaths.
