DANDENONG Angels Baseball Club’s A1 team claimed a 3-2 victory over the Berwick Dodgers in the cross-town clash on Saturday. Coming off two wins to start the season, the Angels were keen to keep the ball rolling and make it three-in-a-row.
Batting first, the boys looked up to the challenge with an early run in the first innings and a strong defensive reply from import Joe Burns – hitting the zone with three strike outs.
Burns continued his strong pitching performance not allowing a runner on base for the next four innings while our Dandenong were able to put on another two runs.
With two innings remaining, the Angels held a slender one-run lead but with a strong pitching display from the Dodgers’ starter combined with sloppy base-running and a few missed opportunities, the game was on a knife’s edge going into the last innings.
With true grit and nerves of steel, Mark Surtees finished off the game with some smart pitching to hold Berwick at bay and the Angels came away with a one-run win.
The A2s were served well by Mathew Young on the mound, who was in control from the get go, while Brad Croft closed out the game to take the 13-2 victory. Other standouts with the bat were Ryan Shane, ‘Disco’ Danny Kendall and Trent Watkinson.
The B1’s bounced back from a disappointing loss last week to win 18-1 against Berwick as Stephen Arms pitched five innings, the B2 won 8- while in C Grade, C1 Angels took a 8-14 loss, C2 Gold finished 12-5 ahead and C2 Blue lost 5-7.
Dandenong’s A1 and A2 teams face Mornington at home this weekend.
