ORGANISERS are disappointed with a cat adoption campaign at Keysborough Animal Shelter after selling just half the number of felines as they did during a previous event.
With the shelter receiving more than 2000 cats a year, Keysborough Animal Shelter spokeswoman Christine Giles said she was very disappointed that just 20 people adopted kittens or cats at the weekend’s Cat Adoption event.
“I think the hot weather and the Grand Prix were factors in this,” she said.
The kittens and cats are sold at discounted prices and have been vet checked, desexed, and microchipped – a process that, when buying from a breeder, could cost hundreds of dollars
The shelter also provides expert advice on caring for cats.
“Young couples, families and older people purchased cats on the weekend,” Ms Giles said.
But despite the poor turnout, Ms Giles said the shelter was still wary of which homes its cats went to.
“Saying any home is better than no home is not the case,” she said.
“We want responsible pet owners who let their cats sleep inside at night.”
She said a potential cat owner should want an animal for companionship – not to catch mice.
