KEYSBOROUGH will begin its inaugural year in the Victorian Women’s Football League (VWFL) this weekend, as the lady Burras travel to Scoresby for their long-awaited season-opener on Sunday.
While the recruiting drive is ongoing at Rowley Allan Reserve, an enthusiastic bunch of Burras have been doing the hard yards over the summer in preparation for their competitive debut.
Under the VWFL’s new structure, Keysborough will square off against Berwick, Parkdale, Scoresby, South Mornington and Yarra Valley in the South East Division.
Lou Capsalis will take the coaching reins for Keysborough’s first campaign, leading a group made up of varying experience levels.
While several of the players are newcomers to the game, many have moved to Keysborough from other clubs within the region.
For on-field leader Alesha Thorne, the opportunity to don the Burras jumper worn by her father and brothers will be a proud moment.
Ms Thorne, who has been involved with the Keysborough Football Netball Club in some capacity since the age of seven, said the ladies have received invaluable support from the boys at the Burra.
“I think it was a bit of a novelty at first,” she laughed.
“But they have been supportive, and it’s amazing how many rub-down boys we’ve been offered.”
Keysborough’s first home game will be against Parkdale on Sunday13 April from noon.
Anyone interested in joining the Burras can call Alesha Thorne on 0402 367 563.
