THE big names in Australian entertainment are coming to Dandenong to perform on stage at the Drum Theatre when it opens early next year.
A number of renowned productions will be part of the 2006 lineup at the historic Dandenong Town Hall that is undergoing a $13.5 million transformation into a worldstandard performing arts venue.
Cultural facilities director, Paul Streefkerk, said the response from the major performance companies in particular has been phenomenal.
“There is clearly a need for a highquality venue in this area and that is evident in the fantastic productions and performances that are booked for the 2006 theatre season,” he said.
On 11 April, Kevin Harrington (The Dish, Sea Change, Neighbours) will star in HIT Production’s version of Hannie Rayson’s comedy/drama Hotel Sorrento.
On 13 May, internationally acclaimed guitar virtuoso Bruce Mathiske will perform.
On 17 June, Henry Szeps (Mother and Son) brings his hilarious oneman show to the Drum.
Bell Shakespeare’s production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona is booked for the 11 July, before Opera Australia brings Carmen, a performance of fiery Spanish rhythms and melodies, to Dandenong on 22 July.
Later in the year Jackie Weaver will star in The Blond, The Brunette and the Vengeful Redhead on 28 September.
Mr Streefkerk said the Drum Theatre will have a membership program to provide exclusive benefits, privileges and services.
Memberships will be available from 14 November.
