Dust down as bore water comes to the fore

BORE water will be used to manage dust suppression on Greater Dandenong’s unsealed roads.
In a bid to reduce the amount of potable water used in Greater Dandenong, the council has established a bore at Tatterson Park in Keysborough South. The bore will be used to fill storage tanks. The water will then be pumped into tankers for use in the dust suppression process.
Engineering Services Director Tim Tamlin said the council had introduced a number of initiatives in the municipality to save water.
“In an effort to cut its potable water use by 25 per cent by 2018, council has launched Towards a Water Smart City – Council’s Sustainable Water Use Plan,” he said.
“The use of bore water on the city’s unsealed roads network is one way council is helping to reduce potable water use.”
Mr Tamlin said there were seven roads in Greater Dandenong that needed to be treated for dust suppression.
He said the council had investigated using recycled water on its roads but it was not possible at this time due to environmental health requirements.
“We are currently using about 70 per cent bore water on our unsealed roads but hope to increase that to 100 per cent in the coming months,” Mr Tamlin said.
