DANDENONG and Springvale have been named in the top 10 worst suburbs for cockroaches.
Melbourne’s recent weather pattern has seen an influx of cockroaches across the city, from Altona to Glen Waverley with nymphs and eggs hitching a ride in second hand furniture, food crates, and cardboard boxes.
Pest control experts, Amalgamated Pest Control, say calls from Melbourne residents about cockroach problems have increased by 50 per cent this season.
Operations manager Emmet Monaghan said cockroaches were most active when rainfall follows warm weather.
Other top 10 suburbs for cockroaches are Footscray, Sunshine, Yarraville, St Kilda, Prahran, Melbourne CBD, Brunswick and Carlton.
Because cockroaches are nocturnal and hide during the day, occupants might not even be aware that their home is infested.
“If cockroaches are observed during daylight hours this is often an indication of an overpopulation which should be treated by professionals immediately,” Mr Monaghan said.
Cockroaches can carry up to 40 species of transmittable bacteria and disease organisms that are harmful to humans, including salmonella, gastroenteritis, dysentery, tuberculosis, hepatitis and typhoid fever.
