Zero toll a good result – police

By Melissa Meehan
That’s what police have called the Easter break that resulted in no fatalities on Greater Dandenong roads.
Region 5 Traffic Inspector Mick Sayer said police were generally pleased with the weekend that saw a greater police presence in Dandenong, Springvale, Noble Park and Keysborough.
He said that out of the 681 people breath-tested only 10 were found to have a blood alcohol reading over 0.05.
Inspector Sayer said 50 drivers were found to be speeding and 22 others were fined for using a mobile phone while driving.
“It’s been pretty good for a long weekend,” he said.
“In saying that, I mean it’s good that there was not a high number of offences, especially drink-driving, but any number of these offences is not good.”
Inspector Sayer said that, after two road deaths in the area over the equivalent weekend last year, to have no fatalities this year was a sign of success.
“I think it’s the visual presence we had around the area,” he said.
“People were coming up to officers thanking them for making them feel safer.”
