CCTV call for Springvale

By Melissa Meehan
SPRINGVALE needs closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, according to a former mayor.
Councillor Youhorn Chea pleaded with council officers to explore options of introducing CCTV after a spate of business windows being broken in Springvale.
At the meeting, Cr Chea said there had been “a lot of problems” at the Springvale shopping centre shops along Springvale Road “especially at night time”.
He said someone had been smashing the windows of shops and requested that mayor Pinar Yesil write to the Police and Emergency Services Minister to organise more police patrols in Springvale.
“Otherwise it is very hard to work in this shopping centre,” he said. “It has been a very bad situation.”
Cr Chea also requested that the council’s chief executive John Bennie explore options such as CCTV for the “safety and good faith” of the business people, which he said the council “needed to support”.
Mr Bennie said he had contacted police after Cr Chea raised the issue.
“ … our concerns have been conveyed and police advised they would investigate the matter further,” he said.
Cr Yesil said she would be happy to write to the police minister.
