KEYSBOROUGH greyhound trainer Geoff Mitchell collected his first Group race win on Friday night when his star dog Remo Rubik won the Group Two Wangaratta Cup.
The dog was in good form heading into the race, breaking the track record in a Warrnam-bool Cup heat a month earlier and he again shone in the heats at Wangaratta, recording the fastest time.
Remo Rubik lined up against Jason Thompson’s legendary sprinter El Galo in the final and it was Thompson’s dog that took the early lead.
El Galo led in the first and second splits of the 474m race, but Remo Rubik managed to do what few others have done in recent memory – run down El Galo.
Remo Rubik belted home, edging out El Galo by a head to win in 26.76 seconds, leaving his trainer elated.
“El Galo is the best in Australia, so to run him down was a phenomenal effort,” Mitchell said.
“He’s the best I’ve trained – they don’t come around very often.”
