MORE than half the workers in the City of Greater Dandenong believe they are not reaching their full potential.
A council survey has revealed that only 32 per cent of residents are satisfied with the use of their own work skills.
Most of the respondents said they would like to better use their skills.
The 2004/05 figure was down two per cent from 2003/04.
City of Greater Dandenong CEO Carl Wulff said the statistics would be passed on to regional industry bodies.
“We need to try to have some influence with SEMMA (South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance) to let them know that we have an untapped skill base.”
The council has also notified the State and Federal Governments about the issue and the impact it is having on members of the migrant community.
The council has asked for an investigation into the recognition of formal qualifications obtained overseas.
Cr Kevin Walsh described the problem as a mismatch of labour.
“There was an over supply of people with information technology skills a few years ago.
“It seems there is now a new problem and we need to find out if we can encourage the business community address it.”
