Dean’s bald new look

By Bridget Cook
NOBLE Park man Dean Barrett lost his 40cm long locks on last week as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.
The 21-year-old made the brave shave in front of more than 120 fellow members of the 2nd Springvale Scouts Bunarong Rovers group.
Mr Barrett exceeded his hopes – to raise more than $250 – when he raised $653 for the Leukaemia Foundation.
“It’s a really good feeling to raise that much and know it’s going to a good cause,” he said.
His 23-year-old brother Lee donated $110 to be in control of the shaver.
Mr Barrett said his bald new look was quite a shock for himself, friends and family.
“I barely recognised myself,” he said. “It’s a lot colder … I’ve definitely noticed the temperature difference on my head.”
Before Mr Barrett was born, his brother Mark died of leukaemia at the age of 13.
“I didn’t know much about the disease when I was younger,” Mr Barrett said.
“But now I know what a scummy disease it is and what a major problem.”
Two years ago Mr Barrett shaved his long goatee for the event and raised about $100.
He said he hoped to take part in the initiative again next year, depending on how his hair grew back.
