Conmen on

By Bridget Cook
The warning comes following a report about dodgy operators in the area who have already targeted a Dandenong church community centre.
The community centre had their car park partially resurfaced by the dodgy asphalters.
CAV said a group of four men, who drove in a white tip truck with “Caution, Hotmix” on it, offered to fill in a few pot holes in the church car park for a nominated fee per square metre.
The men advised staff they were doing roadworks nearby and had leftover mix.
It was reported that they did more work than agreed and demanded several thousand dollars payment, much more than the agreed price.
CAV said it was rare for legitimate asphalters to have bitumen left over from roadworks and if people take up the offer they run many risks.
CAV has warned people to watch out for the following signs to look out for travelling conmen.
• Someone looking like a tradesman knocks on your door uninvited.
• They offer cheap repair quotes, cash-only, today-only and pressure you to accept it on the spot.
• The tradesman demands up-front payment.
