A SERIOUS accident in Bangholme this week has prompted local police to warn cyclists of the dangers associated with cold mornings.
A cyclist was airlifted to hospital after he was hit by a truck in overcast and misty conditions.
Springvale Police this week called for cyclists to be wary when riding through morning mist.
The cyclist, a 62-year-old Frankston man, was riding along the Dandenong-Frankston Road in Bangholme when he was hit by the truck travelling behind him about 5.20am on Tuesday.
The accident happened about 500 metres from Glasscocks Road.
Sergeant Geoff Straughen of Springvale Police said the cyclist was wearing minor reflective gear at the time of the accident.
But, because of the morning mist the driver of the truck did not see him, Sgt Straughen said.
“He was in the left lane section of the road where there were no street lights,” Sgt Straughen said.
“It was an overcast morning.”
Sgt Straughen said the incident served as an example to all cyclists that cold mornings posed a threat to their safety by restricting driver visibility.
“We are coming into winter, and it is a timely reminder for cyclists to exercise care,” he said.
“(The rider) had reflective gear on, but it was very small.”
The cyclist is in a serious condition in the Alfred Hospital.
