A CRITIQUE of modern society’s obsession with self-improvement comes to The Drum Theatre on 29 June with a performance of The Shape of Things.
In a modern age ruled by the beautiful and envied by the genetically damned, acceptance is only a nip, tuck or cut away. For the slightly overweight and socially inept Adam (Brett Cousins), membership in life’s in-crowd is only something to be experienced from the fringe.
While working at the campus museum, Adam catches bright arts major Evelyn (Susan Godfrey) in the act of defacing an artwork. Their instant rapport quickly develops into a serious romance.
Inspired by their deepening relationship, Adam cleans up his lifestyle and improves his wardrobe. His friends Jenny and Phillip look on unnerved and fascinated. Is Adam’s change for the better? Ditching last season’s jacket is one thing, but how has Adam’s “extreme makeover” affected his soul? The Shape of Things is a compelling play with a dynamic twist at the end that will have everyone on the edge of their seat.
Presented by Red Stitch Actors Theatre, The Shape of Things is an outstanding example of what an independent theatre company can do. The production was nominated for a 2005 Green Room Award for Best Production (Fringe/Independent Theatre). Ensemble member Brett Cousins is also a familiar face at the Green Room Awards, having won Best Actor in an independent production for Red Stitch’s Some Voices in 2004.
The Shape of Things plays at The Drum Theatre on Friday 29 June at 8pm. To book, phone the Box Office on 9771 6666.
