Burra bounces into third

By Brad Kingsbury
KEYSBOROUGH has suddenly emerged as the serious challenger to Narre Warren’s dominance after snatching third place with an 88-point result over Beaconsfield in their Casey Cardinia league match on Saturday.
The Burra did what was required to earn the double chance, opening the game with arrogance and running forward of the ball to create an avalanche of scoring opportunities against its helpless young rivals.
The result of this match was never an issue. The interest was purely in the winning margin to see if the Burra could edge its way into a qualifying final showdown with Pakenham. The visitors were 41 points in arrears at half-time and that was extended to 61 points at three-quarter time, despite the Burra kicking badly for goal in the crosswind conditions.
It was the home side’s running players who dominated the match and set up the big win, with Daniel Morland, Matthew Freeman, Clinton King and Shaun Daly all chipping in as the ball was carried forward time after time.
Keysborough coach Greg Siwes was thrilled with the finish and said it had given his side every opportunity to perform at its best during the business end of the season.
“We’re very happy that we improved on last year,” he said. “We played well and I was very happy that when we had a challenge like what was put before us on Saturday, we reacted in the manner that gave us the best chance to finish as high as we could.”
Beaconsfield mentor Haydn Robins stepped aside after the game and said it was now up to the next coach to build on the gains made over the year.
