Two charged with murder

By Shaun Inguanzo
POLICE investigating last week’s fatal bashing of a Sudanese refugee in Noble Park have charged two men with murder this week.
Police from the Homicide Squad and Greater Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit flew to Adelaide on Sunday to continue investigations into the bashing that left 19-year-old Sudanese refugee Liep Gony with fatal head injuries.
They arrested and charged two men, a 22-year-old and 19-year-old both from Noble Park, with murder.
A passerby found Mr Gony lying unconscious in Mons Parade, Noble Park, on Wednesday night 26 September. He was rushed to hospital but died the next day from severe head trauma.
His uncles, Dodeng Puoch and Banath Johnson, this week released a statement revealing the distress the family was under.
“We ask that the media allow our family to grieve in private during this difficult time,” the statement said.
“We are sure you understand the torment we are enduring after losing a loved one and trust that our request for privacy will not be ignored. We trust that the police are doing everything in their power to bring the offenders to justice and have nothing further to add.”
Mr Gony’s cousin and Sudan Liaison Organisation administrative secretary Yien Thiang Luony said the family needed time to grieve before speaking any further.
The two men will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today (Thursday). A 17-year-old girl arrested with the men will appear in the Children’s Court at a later date charged with criminal damage.
