IT’S A FAR cry from the glamour of Paris and New York, but Dandenong’s Drum Theatre can at least claim to have been the stepping stone for the Australian fashion industry’s future stars.
The Chisholm Institute of TAFE’s Annual Hair and Beauty Awards Night on Monday 19 March still managed to draw the likes of Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor.
The theme for the TAFE college’s Hair and Beauty Centre students was ‘Divas’.
Their challenge was to dress and apply make up to their model in the form of a famous diva, who would then strut the catwalk in a bid to win the judges’ vote.
Marilyn Monroe, Cyndi Lauper, Doris Day and even Cleopatra all made appearances on the night of nights.
Each represented the students’ flair for hair and makeup design, and also for hand-made costumes.
Chisholm Institute’s Hair and Beauty Centre manager Leanne Jenkins said the ceremony showcased the centre’s top students to local industry groups.
“The Hair and Beauty Centre is enjoying continued growth and has a reputation of offering excellence through educational programs that focus on practical skill development and creative inspiration,” she said.
“At Chisholm we area a team of motivated, devoted and highly skilled educators dedicated to maintaining strong links with our dynamic industry and are committed to supporting hairdressing and beauty career development in Victoria.”
While none of the winners were from the Greater Dandenong region, there was one familiar face.
Danielle Zahra, a nominee for the Young Enterprise Award at this month’s Premier Regional Business Awards won her category of Outstanding Certificate II Hairdressing Apprentice for the work on her model ‘Fergie’ from pop music group Black Eyed Peas.
