A chance to detox your house

RESIDENTS can dispose of oils, paints, chemicals and other hazardous materials free of charge this month as part of Greater Dandenong Detox organised by Sustainability Victoria.
Sustainability Victoria, together with the City of Greater Dandenong Council, is urging all residents and those in nearby areas to be part of its Detox Your Home program on Saturday 21 April.
The Sustainability Victoria team will be in the area to collect potentially dangerous, unwanted and old household products.
They will collect paints, used motor oil and dead gas cylinders, as well as insecticides, photographic chemicals, brake fluids, poisonous household and garden products.
The collected materials, usually found under laundry and kitchen sinks, in sheds and garages, will be treated and then recycled or disposed of safely by the specialist team.
People can bring in as many items as they wish. However, 20-litre size containers are the maximum accepted.
Householders can deposit their unwanted household chemicals in the car park at the rear of Springvale City Hall between 8am and 4pm on Saturday 21 April.
Sustainability Victoria’s chief executive Geoff Mabbett said he hoped the initiative would stop people pouring chemicals down drains.
“Household chemicals and toxins should never be dumped or thrown away in the rubbish, or poured down the stormwater drain,” Mr Mabbett said.
“Importantly, our service, run in conjunction with the City of Greater Dandenong council, gives everyone peace of mind by getting old and unwanted products out of their homes.”
