Council workers to learn about Islam

COUNCIL workers will learn more about Islam at a forum held today (Thursday).
The Department of Justice and the Department of Human Services will present An Australian Expression Of Islam in conjunction with the City of Greater Dandenong Council as part of the State Government’s Cultural Diversity Week activities.
City mayor Youhorn Chea said the forum was an awareness-raising tool for staff members curious about the workings of Islam.
“Here in the City of Greater Dandenong we are proud of the diverse mix of cultures and beliefs that make our community such a vibrant place,” he said.
“People from 154 different countries call Greater Dandenong home, each bringing a piece of the world to our doorstep.
“Anything we can do to learn more about one another is a step towards ensuring Greater Dandenong remains a harmonious and prosperous city for years to come.”
The event features Sherene Hassan, an executive committee member of the Islamic Council of Victoria. Sherene has conducted almost 400 information sessions on Islam to diverse audiences.
The forum is being held at the Dandenong Community Arts Centre.
