DANDENONG retailers say a proposal by the city’s mayor to install security cameras in Lonsdale Street will only work if someone monitors the vision 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association (DRTA) this week supported a call by Greater Dandenong mayor Peter Brown to install security cameras along Lonsdale Street
But DRTA chairman Roy Aspinall said traders had discussed the idea many times over the past 10 years and were only confident the system would work if it was monitored at all times.
“We have looked at that before, and if police have to monitor the cameras then one problem is that it takes people off the street,” Mr Aspinall said.
“We can see the value but the idea needs careful examination.”
Cr Brown this week said he had received a mixed response to his suggestion, but the reaction was largely a positive one.
“The manager of a large security firm has advised me there is funding available for such an idea through the Federal Government,” he said.
“And I’ve been advised by two different sources that a similar thing has been installed in the main street of Lilydale and the main street of Mornington because of anti-social behaviour.”
