Firefighters hop to the rescue

DANDENONG Fire Station served as a rally and dispatch point for firefighting strike teams heading to South Australia this week.
Crews from regions eight and 13, which include the areas of Beaconsfield, Devon Meadows, The Basin, Wandin and Mount Eliza, arrived at the station on Monday morning to prepare to aid firefighting efforts on Kangaroo Island in South Australia.
Country Fire Authority photographer Keith Pakenham said the crews he photographed were heading out to the South Australian Country Fire Service training ground for overnight accommodation before leaving by ferry on Tuesday to the island.
The scrub-laden island has become a fiery inferno with more than 28,000 hectares destroyed by raging bushfires so far.
