U2 fans band together

– Shaun Inguanzo
FANS who eagerly queued outside a Dandenong store for tickets to this month’s tour by Irish rock band U2 said they were shattered but sympathetic to news of the tour’s postponement.
It is believed the daughter of U2 guitarist Dave ‘The Edge’ Evans has leukaemia, prompting the rock group to postpone the late March concerts in Australia.
Doveton-based U2 fan Kate O’Donnell said she was shattered by the news.
“It’s a family member so you have to feel sorry for them,” she said.
“I love the band that much, but this is bad news, I’m just so upset.”
In December Ms O’Donnell, along with a swag of diehard U2 fans, had camped overnight outside the ticketing booth to be among the first to grab U2 tickets.
Fellow campers Rebecca Almatrah, Fiona Bruzzi, Kevin Lay and Steve Limbrick all expressed similar sentiments to Star.
But no-one was more disappointed than Casey resident Steve Jenkins, who won tickets after shaving his chest hair so only the word ‘U2’ remained for a Melbourne radio station competition.
Mr Jenkins described the win as a “dream come true” after missing out on tickets to U2 concerts scheduled this year and in 1998.
“Well, it’s like putting family before money, and I think that’s got a lot of balls,” he said of the band’s decision.
“But even if the concert does get cancelled I can get money back for the tickets … it will probably be worth $200-plus just for shaving my chest hairs.
“I try to look at it in a funny sense.”
Ticketmaster, responsible for selling the Melbourne tickets, has told fans to hold onto their tickets until new dates are officially announced.
