THE BUILDER of Dandenong’s Drum Theatre has picked up a Master Builders Association award for the redeveloped Town Hall.
Builders from across Australia were presented with prestigious National Awards for Excellence in Building at Master Builders National Awards dinner held at Parliament House earlier this month.
Kane Constructions won the National Public Buildings $10 million to $20 million award for The Drum Theatre, which cost about $14 million to inject new life into.
City of Greater Dandenong cultural facilities director Paul Streefkerk said the award was a boost for the new theatre.
“The Drum Theatre, Dandenong Town Hall is something that not only council but the entire community can be proud of and this award is wonderful news,” he said.
Master Builders Association CEO Wilhelm Harnisch said the awards recognised the significant contribution of the building and construction industry to Australia’s economy.
“The winners have demonstrated excellence in innovation, finding solutions to the ever greater demands of clients and constantly increasing government regulations,” he said.
“The redevelopment of the historic Dandenong Town Hall incorporating The Drum Theatre creates a facility for the communities’ greater enjoyment and participation in the arts.
“The auditorium is encased in a glazed bar cladding system covered in garnet red Villaboard to create a distinctive drum-shaped feature that forms a dramatic backdrop to the historic facade.”
The restored heritage building houses the box office, bar, committee room and four function rooms.
The new auditorium provides seating for 535 people over two tiers.
