FROM a toothpick to a coolroom, Gemini Catering Equipment and Uniforms can supply every kitchen need, be it domestic or commercial.
A pioneer in its industry, Gemini Catering this year celebrates 25 years in Dandenong, currently located in Pultney Street.
Owner and proprietor Jennifer Puppa began the business from her home after her nephew – an apprentice chef – complained there was nowhere to buy quality supplies in Melbourne.
“We were the only ones in the beginning, there was no other business like this that carried our range, so I’d say we were pioneers,” she said.
“Now everyone is coming out of the woodwork and joining in on the catering equipment scene.
“But I don’t think anybody has the range we have, combining large commercial equipment, chef wear and work clothing, to kitchen utensils, crockery and glassware.”
Since the beginning, not only has Jennifer, with help from husband Jim, created a one-stop-shop for chef and cooking needs, but the devoted retailer has also given a large part of her time back to the Dandenong business community.
Mrs Puppa has been largely involved with groups such as the Dandenong Retail Traders’ Association and Women In Business to help promote trade in a city she believes has amazing potential.
“I love it all, and having been a Dandenong person I am absolutely honoured, even if we don’t win, to be part of the City of Greater Dandenong and the Chamber of Commerce,” she said.
Mrs Puppa played a major role in lobbying for the redevelopment of Dandenong’s Town Hall.
“It was close to what we wanted, but instead of being dusty and full of cobwebs at least now there is a place for entertainment that will bring people to Dandenong,” she said.
Gemini Catering Equipment and Uniforms was also nominated in Small Business, Service Excellence and Corporate and Social Responsibility.
