YEAR nine student Richard Lominded is working during and outside of school hours to adapt to the Australian lifestyle.
A refugee who migrated to Australia in 2002, Richard is now a student at St John’s Regional College in Dandenong, and is an active participant in the Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning (SAIL) program.
SAIL is a not for profit organisation that provides a variety of free services to Melbourne’s Sudanese community including English tuition, counselling and general lifestyle help.
Richard, along with his two younger sisters, has been attending SAIL tuition for two years to enhance his English reading, writing, spelling and verbal communication.
Through SAIL, Richard has made friends by attending monthly camps and excursions, including a trip to the Eureka Tower, a football match and, more recently, a trip to meet the Victorian Governor at Government House.
With the help of SAIL, Richard has aligned well with his peers since moving to Australia and can effortlessly strike up a conversation without needing help with his English.
