Oh possums, it’s staged magic

AUSTRALIAN children’s literature icon Possum Magic will make its stage debut in Dandenong on the school holidays.
Possum Magic The Musical will bring to life Mem Fox’s classic picture book at Dandenong’s Drum Theatre on Wednesday 9 July during shows at 2pm and 6.30pm.
The production comes complete with Aussie references for which the book is famous, including lamingtons, pavlovas and vegemite sandwiches.
In addition to the stage show, the Walker Street Gallery in Dandenong will host an exhibition of original illustrations from the picture book, as well as a meet and greet with illustrator Julie Vivas, on Saturday 5 July between 2pm and 3.30pm.
City of Greater Dandenong cultural facilities director Paul Streefkerk said the stage production and the exhibition were in honour of Possum Magic’s 25th birthday.
“The stunning water colour illustrations have kept Possum Magic alive in the minds and memories of both children and adults for 25 years,” he said.
“Combine this with the stage production and it is a fitting tribute to a classic Australian tale.”
The 2pm show will include an Auslan signed performance.
The exhibition of original illustrations will be held from July 1 to 28 at the Walker St Gallery in Dandenong.
