Gather study in tolerance

By Melissa Meehan
PEACE and tolerance was the theme at the Interfaith Annual Gathering 2008 last week.
As part of celebrations for the Year of Languages, “Speaking Words of Love” students from a number of schools including Minaret College, Killester College, St Anthony’s Primary School and Southvale Primary School performed a dramatic performance to get people thinking.
Minaret College Year 11 student Abdul Hammoud said that participating in the combined schools performance at the Drum Theatre in Dandenong was a great opportunity for him and his classmates.
“It was a great chance for us to be able to promote harmony, peace and tolerance,” Abdul said.
“It was a challenge for us all, so we decided to show what society would be like if everybody was intolerant of different cultures and walks of life, but it ended up with everybody living in harmony.”
Abdul said he thought it was important for his generation to speak up about peace and harmony.
“Every generation can make a difference,” he said. “We think there is a lot of room for change and improvement.”
Teacher Nisveta Sehavdic said the students took on the challenge with a positive attitude and was very proud of their performance.
“They pulled it all together in three meetings with the other schools, and now they have come out with new friendships,” Ms Sehavdic said.
“It ties in so well with the messages they were trying to get across.”
