Celebrating Maria’s 40 years

By Melissa Meehan
DANDENONG’s Maria Tilli lasted only three days at her first job, but last week she was presented with the Victorian Police Service Medal for 40 years’ service.
“It’s actually quite funny,” Ms Tilli said.
“After only spending three days at my first job, I’m pretty sure no-one would have guessed I would have stayed with Victoria Police for 40 years.”
After completing her course at business college, Ms Tilli started work with an insurance company.
“Business college taught me shorthand and typing, so I was excited to start my new job,” Ms Tilli said.
“But by my second day my father knew I was not happy, and I decided to quit.”
On her third and last day, Ms Tilli said she was farewelled with a surprising parting gift.
“They handed me an envelope and said a job was opening at Victoria Police on Monday,” Ms Tilli said.
“And the rest is history.”
She worked in many areas of the police force during her 40 years as an unsworn member.
“At the moment I’m looking after WorkCover, but previously I’ve been in the personnel department, traffic management and the crime task squad,” Ms Tilli said.
“Maybe that’s why I’ve stayed for so long, there has been a fair bit of variety.”
And the next step in her long career with the police?
“Who knows?” Ms Tilli said.
“My daughter is still living at home, so I might be there for some time yet.”
