DANDENONG opener Brett Forsyth played a commanding role in helping the Panthers to victory over Frankston Peninsula in the last round of Victorian Premier Cricket before the Christmas break.
Forsyth was a lone hand at the top of the order as Dandenong took to the A.H Butler Oval crease in the morning, working hard to hold his wicket while others tumbled around him.
He lost opening partner Ricky Damiano in the first over before a run was scored, then James Nanopoulos 13 runs later.
The wickets continued to fall and the Panthers were at one stage languishing at 6/64, and Frankston seemed to be in control of the match.
But Forsyth was the thorn in the home team’s side, and he pushed his way on to 85, batting with every player in the line up before finally falling as the last wicket.
As if to show how hard he fought, Forsyth managed just three boundaries and one six in his innings.
James Miller was his eventual destroyer, and the bowler picked up the best figures for his side, with 4/35 off 10 overs.
Frankston Peninsula got off to the best possible start in reply, with the opening pair putting on 65 for the first wicket.
It seemed smooth sailing until Panthers captain Darren Dempsey removed Sam Wiese, and then Tom Donnell came into play.
Dempsey stifled the opposition, conceding just six runs in his 10 overs, and from the other end Donnell went on the attack, claiming four wickets in quick succession to bring the game back on even terms.
Frankston Peninsula was on 5/82, but unlike the Panthers earlier in the day, the home side lacked a top-order batsman to guide his side through, and the team collapsed, reaching 9/126 at the end of the 50 overs.
Dandenong took the victory and a bonus point, giving the side a welcome boost heading into the break.
The Panthers face a difficult challenge this Saturday, with Fitzroy Doncaster coming off a big win against Casey-South Melbourne.
