Drum up for city’s best

By Melissa Meehan
THREE community members were honoured for their work in Greater Dandenong at the Drum Theatre on Australia Day.
Mayor Pinar Yesil presented the awards to Sister Ann Halpin, named Citizen of the Year; Ann Francis, named Non-resident of the Year; and Jasmina Kevric named Young Achiever of the Year.
Citizen of the Year Sister Ann Halpin was recognised for her work in establishing Wellsprings for Women Incorporated.
For more than 30 years Sister Ann Halpin has been committed to the City of Greater Dandenong, taking a leading role in International Women’s Day, World Refugee Day, Seniors Week and Poverty Week.
Cr Yesil said more than 200 women now attend Wellsprings each week – a place of support and a place where women can grow.
“Sister Halpin has always focused on the needs of others,” Cr Yesil said.
“Regardless of faith, culture or life experience she has provided friendship and support to all.”
“Greater Dandenong’s Citizen of the Year Award is a fitting acknowledgement of her outstanding contribution to our community and I hope it inspires her to continue her good work.”
Non-Resident of the Year Ann Francis was recognised for her contribution to community life in Greater Dandenong, which spans more than 23 years.
Cr Yesil said Ann Francis had dedicated most of her life to helping others through her work with the Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau and the Red Cross.
“Her perseverance and determination has been a great source of inspiration to the Greater Dandenong community and the people she works with.”
Young Achiever of the Year Jasmina Kevric spends her time encouraging other young people to take pride in a sense of community and promotes the importance of education.
“Coming from a non-English speaking background I understand the difficulties when English is not your first language,” Cr Yesil said.
“She has been instrumental in creating a youth-led magazine called Dream Catcherz. The magazine is distributed to more than 1000 young people across Greater Dandenong and is produced by people from culturally diverse backgrounds.”
The awardees will receive a certificate and flowers to mark their achievement during a formal presentation ceremony.
