CATS are less likely than dogs to survive after being hit by a vehicle, according to latest research.
Research conducted by Australia’s largest animal hospital, Lort Smith Animal Hospital, and leading insurer AAMI shows that more dogs than cats were hit by vehicles but dogs were more likely to survive because of their size and comparatively greater weight.
According to AAMI’s research most animal strikes in Victoria occur on country roads or streets, followed closely by roads in built-up areas.
Anyone who hits a dog or cat with their vehicle should approach the animal with care as it may bite.
They should wrap the animal in a towel or blanket, try to minimise their movements and get them to a vet as soon as possible.
