Jailed for bashing death

By Melissa Meehan
AN 18-year-old Ethiopian immigrant has been sentenced to eight years jail for the fatal bashing of a man in Springvale two years ago.
The man, who cannot be named, was16 years old in March 2007 when herobbed and fatally attacked Malaysiancitizen Leon Lim.
Mr Lim was working in Australia and sending money back to his wife and four children who remained in his home country.
The Supreme Court heard that the offender after drinking a bottle of ‘Passion Pop’ with friends attacked Mr Lim on the street with the empty bottle.
He then stole his phone and wallet.
The man pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Justice Paul Coghlan described the attack as callous.
He said he took into account the man’s age and difficult background in sentencing and set a non-parole period of four years.
