GREATER Dandenong residents are being asked to join a demonstration outside Water Minister Tim Holding’s Springvale office on Friday (tomorrow).
The protest, organised by Friends of the Earth, is expected to be peaceful, with police and Mr Holding’s office aware of the group’s plans.
Spokesman Cam Walker said that the group would demand sustainable water options for Melbourne rather than the Wonthaggi desalination plant and the Sugarloaf Pipeline.
“We all know Melbourne is facing growing water stress,” Mr Walker said. “In response they have announced a desalination plant and a pipeline that will pump water from the Goulburn River.”
He said that while both projects were being built for the benefit of Melbourne people, everyone should educate themselves and look at alternative measures.
“We want to invite everyone in Greater Dandenong and surrounds to join us,” Mr Walker said, “and demand that the Government listen to our worries.”
The demonstration will take place from 11.30am to 1pm at 387-398 Springvale Road, Springvale.
