MORE than 6000 people braved the torrential rains and gusty winds to enjoy the Pacifika Down Under Festival at Dandenong Park on Saturday.
The festival, aimed at helping young people from Pacific region communities celebrate their identities, featured performances by community groups, cultural displays, traditional food stalls, arts and crafts.
Lawrence Mauga – Reib, president of PPCG Inc, said it was an “awesome day” despite the rain.
“The rain deterred a few people, but I guess it (the rain) was a blessing in disguise,” he said.
“If we had anymore, we couldn’t fit them in.”
Some performances were delayed by the weather, while others danced in the rain.
“When they danced in the rain the crowds came out and stood in the rain too,” Mr Mauga – Reib said.
“It was just an awesome day.”
Mr Mauga – Reib said he hoped to hold the festival at the show grounds the next time around as the attendance was heartening this time.
