Cool room money to save delays

NEW cool rooms at Dandenong market will be in place sooner rather than later, following a council decision to increase the value of the contract for stage two of the market redevelopment.
The contract amendment allocates an extra $421,592 for the cool rooms, the cost of which initially was to be borne by the site owners themselves.
The City of Greater Dandenong will recover the extra cost from fruit and vegetable traders who occupy the space.
The purpose of the redevelopment project is to remove trader truck parking from customer car parks.
The recommendation to amend the contract was approved at last week’s council meeting, with the agreement of theMarket Project Control Group, which had been discussing the amendment.
The market control group consists of the Red Gum Ward councillors Angela Long, Paul Donovan and Jim Memeti, as well as Silverleaf Ward’s Cr John Kelly and Paperbark Ward’s Cr Roz Blades.
Council’s engineering services department at last week’s meeting reported concerns about possible disruption to market tenants and customers if the project was delayed, as well as concerns about inconsistencies in quality and increased costs to the council that delays could cause.
Council is keen to maximise the number of customer parking spaces and minimise hazards through the movement of goods from trucks to the trading stalls.
A loading bay and storage space, including cool rooms, will remove the necessity for truck parking.
