WORK has slowed down for Dandenong fire brigade since Black Saturday, but diligent CFA members keep busy with routine training.
Several firefighters donned their uniforms and drove their tankers to the Robert Booth Reserve last week to practise essential skills.
“We train for a few hours a day from Monday to Friday for skill maintenance and skill acquisition,” Fire Officer Rob Cochrane said.
“Firefighters train with equipment that rarely sees the light of day – in case we ever have to use it.”
CFA members also train for rescues, cleaning up chemical spills and educating the public about fire safety procedures.
“We cover a whole gamut of things,” Mr Cochrane said. “Firefighting isn’t only about putting water on fire any more.”
