Police put crime online

By Melissa Meehan
A NEW online police news site will keep residents informed of crime in Greater Dandenong.
Chief Police Commissioner Simon Overland launched Victoria Police News on Tuesday and said the initiative would provide a direct link between the community and police.
It showed that the police was expanding its online presence in an increasingly digital era.
In addition to accessing the latest police news, people can simply enter their postcode and find out the latest crime statistics and serious and fatal collision data for their neighbourhood under the site’s My Place application.
Police will release its crime statistics to the community on a three-monthly basis via the site.
There will also be a message from the local police inspector about police issues in their suburbs.
On the website, Greater Dandenong Inspector Charlie Allen said the site aimed to improve community confidence and perception of safety by educating the public on personal and home security.
”We will also work with welfare groups to reduce the negative impact of drugs and alcohol use within the Greater Dandenong area,” he said.
“The road toll is another key focus for Greater Dandenong police, with police region five having the highest toll of all regions.”
He said the main message for Greater Dandenong residents was to concentrate on the road at all times.
