DANDENONG police this week honoured the traditional owners of the land occupied by their station with a smoking ceremony and unveiling of a new plaque.
Coinciding with National Reconciliation Week, the event was an opportunity to meet new Aboriginal community liaison officer Belinda Jose.
Ms Jose will work together with local Aboriginal people to strengthen their relationship with police.
The new plaque was unveiled by Wurundjeri elder Jemima Gardiner, acknowledging the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land.
“The unveiling of the plaque is a symbol of Victoria Police’s commitment to working towards a better relationship with local Aborigines,” Ms Jose said.
“And working towards reconciliation.”
