EASTERNATS organiser Jon Davison has joined forces with more than 7000 Easternats fans in an endeavour to save the controversial event.
This week Mr Davison posted an announcement on a Facebook site, dedicated to saving the event, explaining the details of the Melbourne Racing Club’s contentious decision and seeking the support of all interested parties.
Mr Davison stated that the picture that had been painted about the Easternats was a total fabrication and disgrace and could not be supported by the event’s proven track record.
“The Easternats has committed no offence. It has become a victim of publicity devoted to the Hoon Legislation and the unfair stereotype image that this has created,” he said.
“Should there be no interest in resolving the current situation, then I urge all interested parties to join with me and make our outrage known to every politician, council member, the premier, the minister for racing and other cabinet ministers.” Following this year’s event Mr Davison received about $7000 worth of fines from the Greater Dandenong Council for breaching planning permit conditions.
Mr Davison explained however that this year they staged the most successful event in its 14-year history where there were no incidents, arrests or any record of lodged complaints.
Mr Davison said despite still having an agreement with the MRC for three more years, he received a letter from solicitors stating that as the council permit had been breached, the agreement would be terminated.
Mr Davison is now calling on fans of good-natured motoring fun to join the Facebook site.
“This petition calls upon all parties to meet as soon as possible to consider the event based upon its proven record and resolve any issues and have the Easternats reinstated at Sandown so it can continue for 2010 and beyond.”
