DANDENONG dominated the majority of its clash with Sunshine Georgies at George Andrews Reserve on Saturday and was unlucky not to secure a win, instead collecting a 1-1 draw.
Sunshine split the game open in the fourth minute when Chris Konstas headed home a Joe Clancy corner from the far post, giving the visitors the early momentum.
But the ladder-leaders have proven all year they are not a team to sit idly by when trailing, and they fought their way back into the game by mid-way through the half.
Dandenong striker Colin Quirk was ever-dangerous on attack, first forcing Sunshine keeper Martin John into a great save with a cheeky back-heel towards goal, then striking the cross-bar with a free-kick, and soon after hitting the upright again.
But the Thunder could not find a breakthrough in the first half, and it took until the 68th minute for the home side to tie the scores.
Marcus Stergiopoulos was the hero, bending a corner kick past the waiting pack and a very surprised Sunshine keeper, into the net.
From there it was game on, and Dandenong actually found the back of the net twice, only to have the goals disallowed for a foul and an offside call.
Elsewhere, Dandenong’s closest rival South Melbourne picked up another win, closing within six points — or two games — of the ladder-leader, but Dandenong is unlikely to drop many points over the final five rounds.
In its last five games, Dandenong will play the bottom five sides, starting with Whittlesea next week, then followed by Richmond, Preston, Melbourne and Heidelberg.
