Young sports tackle diabetes

WHETHER it was a mark, a kick, a throw or maybe even passing a pom pom, students from Southvale Primary School took up the challenge to make 1.5 million sporting passes last week – one for every Australian with diabetes.
The ‘Turning to Sport for Good Health’ challenge aims to raise awareness of diabetes and educate children that sport plays a big part in a healthy and active lifestyle. The sporting challenge ran from 17 to 28 August and was a joint initiative of the Australian Sports Commission’s Active After-school Communities (AASC) program and Diabetes Australia.Southvale’s AASC co-ordinator Brenda Botterill said that the students embraced the challenge of the 1.5 million pass target with even the Prep students recording their passes each day.“Pocket cards are also taken home so that parents could record passes and sports undertaken after school,” Ms Botterill said.
AASC regional co-ordinator Anthony King said about 22, 000 Victorian kids joined forces in each region in an effort to reach the 1.5 million target.
He said that the challenge not only raised awareness about diabetes but also gave students the opportunity to participate in a variety of different activities which they may not usually have access to.
